Local-first expense PWA
Expleu
A client-only expense and payment tracker that keeps recurring obligations, due dates and completion history on the user’s device.

- Local-first expense PWA
The problem
Expense tracking should be quick enough to use on a phone without requiring an account or handing personal financial data to a server. The interface also needed to make overdue, upcoming, recurring and completed payments understandable at a glance.
Scope and architecture
My responsibilities
- Product definition and mobile interface design
- React application development
- PWA and service-worker setup
- Local persistence, backup and restore flows
System
- Client-only React single-page application
- IndexedDB-backed browser-local storage
- Web app manifest and service worker
- No application server, accounts or remote database
Key decisions
- 01
Keep financial data on the device.
Expense records live in browser-local storage rather than a hosted account. The application can deliver its core value without collecting personal financial information or maintaining an authentication system.
- 02
Organize the interface around time and urgency.
The dashboard separates overdue, today, this week and all pending amounts, while the payment list adds day, week, month and year views for more deliberate planning.
- 03
Make local-first data portable.
JSON export and import provide a clear recovery and transfer path, while the settings screen keeps reminders and permanent deletion under the user’s control.
What I built
I built Expleu as a client-only React application with an installable PWA shell, service worker and on-device persistence. It supports one-off and recurring expenses, due-state summaries, day-to-year filtering, completion tracking, local notifications, and JSON backup and restore. No application backend or user account is required.

Private, installable expense tracking without accounts or server-side storage
- Financial records remain in browser-local storage on the user’s device
- Installable mobile experience with recurring schedules and due-state reminders
- Portable JSON backup and restore without a hosted account
